Sarah Hillman, an Exercise Physiologist from Southern Sydney recently undertook The FODMAP Challenge. We asked her to write a few words about her experience. Both from a participant, and health care practitioner perspective in participating in The FODMAP Challenge. Take it away Sarah…
Unbeknownst to me, I had probably been suffering from food sensitivies for quite a few years without knowing what was going on. I can recall many times feeling quite bloated with abdominal pain and nauseous a few hours after eating However I couldn’t never quite put my finger on why it was because it could happen after eating many different types of food. So no link was ever drawn.
As I became more aware of gut health and food sensitivies the light bulb finally went off that maybe just maybe the issues I was experiencing were due to certain foods that I was consuming on a regular basis. Earlier this year I decided to cut out gluten, soy and yeast to see how my symptoms went. I definitely felt much better with reduced bloating and abdominal pain. This lasted for a couple months when the symptoms returned. I couldn’t believe it! What else could I possibly cut out?! Around this time, I was introduced to Chloe and The Fodmap Challenge.
How was my experience in The FODMAP Challenge
The Fodmap Challenge is easily laid out and takes all the stress out of the elimination phase. Chloe provides recipes that are easy to follow and make without having to be a masterchef! With the different options it fits all lifestyles and cooking skill levels. One of the best components of the program was gaining the knowledge that certain portion sizes of different foods goes from fodmap friendly to not so friendly! I even travelled for 3 weeks during my challenge. I was able to continue with the elimination phases seamlessly due to the ease of the program and understanding what I was trying to achieve at each phase. The weekly videos and Facebook quizzes were really educational and taught me so much about IBS and how to manage the condition.
Did it help determine your triggers?
By the end of the program I now know exactly what will set off my symptoms and haven’t had any bloating, abdominal pain or nausea since completing the program. Who know that onion, garlic and dairy (and capsicum!) were my triggers!
Would I recommend The FODMAP Challenge?
I can’t recommend The Fodmap Challenge enough! It’s so easily laid out and definitely not as stressful as one may think to complete over the 12 weeks. Chloe and the team are fabulous and there to answer all questions along the way!
Sarah teaches pilates, and provides PT sessions at her rooms in Sylvania.
